Top 5 Causes Of Spring Allergies
- Posted on: Mar 24 2015
Allergies can strike almost any time of the year for someone who is highly affected, but spring has some of the worst conditions for anyone. Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, can greatly affect a patient’s quality of life. As spring approaches, here are the top five allergens you should be aware of.
Trees are the number one offender of allergies in the spring, producing pollen that can cause extreme allergic reactions.
Some of the biggest tree allergy offenders during springtime are:
- Box elder
More likely to cause issues in late spring, after trees pollinate, grasses can trigger hay fever, a common spring allergy. Some of the grasses that often cause this issue are:
- Bermuda grass
- Red top
- Certain blue grasses
- Sweet vernal
- Timothy grass
- Orchard grass
Mold can be a year-round issue, but with all the other allergies that can be encountered in the spring, it could become even worse. Warm, moist, and dingy areas are the best places for mold to hide, and if can sometimes be found in homes. This could be a real issue for someone with intense allergies so make sure to always have a new home inspected.
Weeds are usually more likely to cause hay fever in the fall, but they can still be an offender in the spring. Ragweed can cause many problems for individuals with pollen sensitivity and being ready for the possibility, even in spring, is sometimes necessary. Redtop, pigweed, and lamb’s quarters can also cause intense allergic reactions.
Don’t rule out the possibility of a dust allergy, especially during spring cleaning. When working in the garage or attic trying to clear out the cobwebs, or the reaction can be overwhelming. This allergen can cause red and watery eyes, sneezing, and a stuffy many of the same symptoms that hay fever causes.
